Does a queen bed need additional support from the bottom?

The Ikea bed frame link shows two different slatted platforms for the mattress base. The slats for both offerings seem to be very thin.

Have you considered using thick plywood or particle boards laid on the slatted platform, then placing the mattress on this solid base? It would provide a very even surface for the mattress, distributing the weight evenly. Have a platform bed using two of these boards which fit snugly (no glue, no screws) in the frame and give strong support for the mattress. Each has a one inch diameter hole drilled along one side so the panel can be snagged and lifted up or replaced on the frame after moving.

As you mentioned in the question, the addition of that center post made from a 4x4 would be of support benefit. You might want to expand on that by adding three of these 4x4 posts (legs) with a 1x4 board attached on top to provide a solid center support down the length of the bed frame platform. Have even seen DIY projects for king size bed frames and platforms where the plans call for three stabilizing strips placed beneath the slatted bed frame platform. Sounds extreme but if it keeps the mattress platform base from failing, then you have made the right choice.

Incorporating any of these additional support options into the queen size bed frame you purchased would be a way to increase support for the mattress while extending the life of the furniture and providing those who are using the bed a stable and comfortable sleeping space.

We have a rather expensive queen bed, there is a support block in the center. We bought a new queen bed frame that didn't have one and my husband cut a piece of 2X4 to put under the middle of the center slat to give it some support.

Best

I have a queen bed exactly like the one from this Ikea link:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/bedroom/series/11731/

I know that Ikea doesn't have very long lasting and ideal furniture, but due to financial reasons we have settled for a cheaper bed.

I like to take care of my things and I've noticed that this new bed makes a lot of noises just from sitting down on it. It seems like the middle support beam is whats making the sounds. At my job I have noticed that under a king sized bed, they have a wooden rectangled block set directly underneath the middle beam of the bed, do you think I should get something like this for my bed?
