Could asbestos be in textured ceiling?

Not likely, but the ONLY way to know 100% is to have a piece of it tested. That is the law in the USA if renovation is going to take place. The law does not consider age unless there is written documentation of the material.

First asbestos was not in use in construction circa 1987. Second asbestos is not dangerous unless it is disturbed by sanding or chipping. As long as it is encapsulated [under paint, etc.] it poses no danger. Again you probably don't have asbestos! Go to a home improvement store and purchase a drywall repair patch. It is a thin piece of metal mesh that is sticky on one side. Clean the patch area of loose pieces, stick up the patch/mesh. Use a 3"-4" wide putty knife and purchase some drywall patching compound in the smallest size possible [in paint aisle] and put the first thin coat on. Let it dry overnight. Sand off high spots, put a second coat on. Let dry overnight. Add third coat. When it dries use some drywall primer then paint it for a fully finished pro job you can be proud of. Or call a handyman to do it.

No, there's no asbestos. It's just drywall mud, textured (probably with a damp, old fashioned mop) and painted. Actually, it's my favorite type ceiling.

1987 is a little too recent. If we were talking 1960s or early 70s it might be worth checking.

yes. take that piece of the ceiling to a construction worker and tell him this was part of your ceiling and ask him what material it is. if he right away says its asbestos, then it is. else ask an architect.

We live in a 1987 condo and our place has textured ceiling - not popcorn, but a type of pattern. Could this non-popcorn textured ceiling contain asbestos?

The reason why I ask is because there is a small, damaged portion (size of a hand) in our closet and I just want to know if this should be a cause of concern, such as it releasing fibers (assume it contains asbestos). It has been there since we moved in 2 years ago, but I never thought much of it till recently.
