A lot of furniture places do not check your credit nor report what you finance to credit bureaus.
And the only way that you can clear up your credit is by paying what you actually owe to the previous creditors. There is no easy way out, even buy getting a secured card it will still not clear up your credit.
Pay all your bills on time. If you have past due bills, bring them up to date. And whenever possible, pay all your credit cards in full every month.
