More and more people are investing in wind power and solar heating. Geothermal is best done in new construction as it is not easily retrofitted into existing structures.
I want to install solar panels on my house. I also want to install a green roof. Green roofs help immensely in energy consumption. One doesn't have to use nearly as much energy in air conditioning and heating with a green roof because of its insulation properties.
It's expensive to get into at the Government level, and on a smaller scale for the average individual as well. Depending on the type of energy, people don't want it for a number of reasons. Wind turbines for example - loud, ruins views, etc. Lots of disagreement on that one alone. These things are important to people.
It's also a matter of convincing people that it's worth it, and there is still so much controversy out there on the whole subject.
Because most of us are not financially independent and must work for a living therefore we have to live where we can get to work and that means unsustainable city living and or commutes, this limits the sustainable energy options available. Remember when our society was more sustainable, it was because we were more agrarian and lived on farms.
Initial investment is high, but overtime it pays off, depending on what technology you invest in. Some techs are great like solar panels (some are expensive to install) and underfloor heating, you might want to check out how much they cost, these guys below have some pricing for that.
During the 70's we put the task on the back burner and fell greatly behind. After Mobil One synthetic oil was developed, we went no further.
The number 1 thing is that not enough people care about our planet.
I think it must have to do with the declined funding and the financial problem of the individual who wants to systainable energy but can't afford to keep up the pace.

Too expensive, not efficient enough, not advanced enough, governments are focusing on other things.
