What exactly goes into recycling?

I was never taught how to recycle. What kind of things go into recycling?

It depends on your municipality and the market for recyclable materials. Almost every place that recycles will take aluminum. Among plastics, it is usually just PETE (soda and water bottles) and HDPE (milk jugs). Contaminated plastics of these types (e.g. motor-oil containers) are not wanted. Steel cans and bimetalic cans may be collected. Paper is collected if it is not contaminated (pizza boxes) and if the fibres are long enough. Bond paper and newsprint, yes; paper towels and facial tissue, no.

In some places, garbage can be collected and fed to livestock, usually hogs in the USA.

Recycling is possible to some things only. The plastics products can be recycle and there are many ways to recycle. The products which are degradable can't be recycle. You can recycle the plastics which are above a certain level of microns. The plastics carry bags are not recyclable. If Poul like to recycle you can understand the methods of recycling from the industries or you can study it from the internet.

It depends on the recycler and what sorting equipment they had. In Houston, my recycler would take used pots and pans, auto parts, spray cans that were completely depressuriized, but wouldn't take plastic other than type 1 or 2, they also wouldn't take glass. In Calgary, the recycler only wants containers with deposits which I can drop off at the depots for cash myself. It wasn't always so bad in Calgary but Calgary has obviously signed on with a joke of a recycling firm. Keep in mind that you pay a monthly fee for the recycling pickup.

In both cities, plastic bags and cling wrap had to be dropped off in a bin at the grocery store. This is because they wrap themselves around the rollers in the sorting center.

All bio degradable goods. Such as aluminum cans, paper, glass, as well as leaves and grass clippings if your have those services offered in your community. Also many recycle scrap metal and batteries even car batteries. Also note that sometimes recycling pays $$$ such as scrap metal. i.e. carrying an old car to a junk yard where they purchase it from you (usually based on the weight of the car is the amount you get) can be very profitable and environmentally friendly!

Plastics carry bags are not recyclable, but some are bio-degradable. Most things can be recycled there is always some use for it maybe you can research on what turn thing's into ... paper into cardboard used food cans into NEW food cans etc.

Paper – newspaper, magazines and advertising brochures

Cardboard – cardboard, egg cartons and pizza boxes (flattened)

Cartons – milk and juice cartons including tetra packs (rinsed)

Plastic – bottles and containers (no polystyrene), lids removed, with a recycling triangle symbol around the numbers 1 to 7

Glass – bottles and jars but not window glass, light bulbs, mirrors, ceramics, or cookware

Aluminium – cans and pie trays (no food scraps)

Steel – food cans and containers lids (clean) and empty aerosols
