You prevent it from being dumped in the sea where it can choke animals and causes toxic chemical leakage killing entire ecosystems, or from going into a landfill where it will stay in the ground for hundreds of years. It also reduces the amount of waste going to the dump sites in LEDCs where the waste is just left in the open and harbours thousands of bacteria causing diseases for the local population. If one of them hops on a plane infected by one of those new bacteria from the dumps, an epidemic could happen in other countries.
Don't listen to the stigma behind recycling. Not all of us are conceited narcissists, it is just so much better if the plastics gets reused and turned into useful things rather than being thrown in the sea or landfills. Why throw it away if you can still use it? You wouldn't throw away an iPhone just because there was a tiny scratch on the screen, so why throw away plastic when it can be turned into something more productive and better for the environment than what it would be sitting in a dump?
It may be a little expensive, but I for one am willing to pay a little extra to ensure that in the future, our children aren't up to their knees in litter and waste we were too careless or greedy to get rid of properly. You're free to do whatever you like, and I won't judge you for it, but please, do what is best for the world, for our society and future generations, and recycle.
Some people recycle because it makes them feel self righteous. But it's actually wasteful to recycle. It takes a lot of work to recycle stuff. Unless you're dealing with rare minerals like they have in some electronics, it's actually more efficient to just create new stuff.
