I'm 14 and really worrying about my future...?

The other day I got to thinking and, I really want my kids to have a better life than me. Not that I had a bad childhood, I just want to be with one woman forever and have my kids with me 24/7. Anyways... I want to build my own house one day on my own land. When I'm 16, should I get two jobs? One to save money and one to spend? If that doesn't sound like a good idea, please tell me a good idea...I'm very good at saving money.

OMG you are cute and I'm afraid you will learn some unhappy lessons. Try not to set your expectations about having your kids around 24/7 as they will eventually resent you for it.

A sad truth about our economy today is that our interest rates have been kept artificially low by our federal government. This means that people who otherwise couldn't afford a house have been able to qualify for one. It also means that people saving money don't have safe places to put it and earn any decent return. When I was your age, you could put money in a savings account (insured by the federal government) and earn 4%. Today, you are lucky to earn 1/4 of 1%. Our government has encouraged us to SPEND, not to save. So don't work too hard. Eventually the government will have to admit they can't keep up this fraud and interest rates and savings rates will rise.

Even with a part-time job, you could open a Roth IRA and put aside money that you could use (in as little as 5 years) to buy a home. If you were older, the government would give you a tax credit for every dollar you put into your IRA.

When you are old enough for college and applying for financial aid, every dollar you have saved up will be one less dollar they will give you in financial aid. In other words, if you have worked hard for four years and saved up $10,000 for college and your neighbor partied for four years and had nothing saved, the federal government would award him money for college and would tell you to spend your savings. Not very fair, is it?

So if you want to earn and do something for your future, try to think of things you might want when you are an adult that you could purchase now and save. I bought dishes, lamps, a sleeper sofa, a stereo, knowing I'd need all of these things when I grew up and had a place of my own.

At your age, you should plan to do well in school so you can make the money required to finance your lifestyle. Working two jobs at 16 will really jeopardize your chances of doing well in school and moving up to quality jobs in the future. Trying to earn too much money at 16 is a great way to ensure you'll be working the same kinds of jobs at 36.

WOW,

It's really great to hear somebody at 14 with as much DRIVE as you have!!!

I only partially agree with "?" who answered this.

the #1 way to screw up your life is to Not finish high school and have children outside of Wedlock.

God bless

You sound like a wonderful person with a good head on your shoulders. I am impressed that you are thinking about this at a young age.
