Why not try burgundy highlights. Before cutting off your long hair, try just a good trim; that can make a huge difference. You can always go shorter, but you can't go longer!

Do a dark purple

Maybe try something dramatic like peia (she's a singer). She dyed her hair extremely light but it looks great with her skintone.
