How can you fix an empire waist dress so you don't drown in it?

I've found some cute dresses lately, but I hate that most of them are that really flowy style that make pretty much EVERYONE look pregnant - even if you're 100 pounds. I got this cute one in hopes that the fit would grow on me eventually, but so far, not so much. It looks good straight-on, but when I turn to the side it makes me look gargantuan! It literally makes me look twice the size that I am. Is there a way to fix the dress or the material to avoid the pouffing out effect when I turn to the side? I'm thin, but when I wear these kinds of styles I look like I'm the new octo mom. Maybe you can choose the lace up back.So it can make some adjust.
