Is there a way to remove the design on a counter top?

Not without damaging the countertop. Damage is what it would be considered, in a rented apartment. If you were there for 30 years and some more of the pattern wore off, that would be one thing. Removing it on purpose would be damage and you'd have to pay to fix it. It would be more than your damage deposit is.

Re laminate the counter. buy formica sheets and paste it with silicon on old counter .

If its painted on get an old rag and rub it off with some acetone.

Can I have more info on this?

In the apartment I'm renting there is counters from the 70's with flowers. Some are scratched off and I would like to remove all of the pattern.. I thought about sanding them off but then there would be scratchy counters that bacteria can get into... Any ideas?
